Gentle, straightforward answers to the questions families ask most often. If yours is not here, please do ask Debbie — no question is too small.
What is a memory bear?
A memory bear is a handmade keepsake teddy bear sewn from the treasured clothing of someone you love. Each one is cut and stitched by hand from the garments you choose, so a familiar fabric, pattern or button lives on in a shape made to be held. It is a way of keeping someone close — a hug you can reach for whenever you need one.
How much clothing do I need?
Two or three garments are usually just right for one bear. Adult clothing such as jumpers, shirts and dresses gives plenty of fabric to work with, and smaller pieces such as baby clothes can be combined. If you are unsure whether what you have is enough, just ask before you order — Debbie will happily advise, and whatever you send will be treated as precious.
Can you make a bear from a school uniform, baby clothes or a pet’s blanket?
Yes — all three make wonderful bears. Sturdier fabrics such as sweatshirts and polo shirts sew up beautifully, and delicate or stretchy pieces can be gently backed so they hold their shape. A first school jumper, a tiny babygrow or a well-loved pet’s blanket each carry their own kind of memory, and each is welcome here.
How do I post my clothing safely?
After you order, your confirmation email includes a printable order slip and step-by-step postal instructions. Tuck the slip in with your two or three garments, send the parcel by tracked or signed-for post, and keep your proof of postage. For truly irreplaceable pieces, a postal service with compensation cover is worth considering — and every parcel is logged the day it arrives, so you will know it is safe.
What happens to leftover fabric?
Any remaining fabric is set aside once your bear is finished, and returned with your bear if you would like it back — just mention it when you order, or when you reply to your approval photo. Nothing is discarded without asking you first. Even the smallest offcut is treated with the same care as the garment it came from.
How long does a memory bear take?
Every bear is sewn by hand, so making times vary through the year. Your expected timescale is confirmed at checkout, before you pay, and the making begins once your clothing has arrived and the design is agreed. A bear meant to last a lifetime is never rushed — but you will always know where you stand.
Can names and dates be embroidered?
Yes. A name, a date or both can be embroidered on your bear, and you choose the thread colour when you personalise your order. Add-ons such as flat caps and ties are available too. A few stitched letters can say a great deal — many bears carry a name that means everything.
Do you deliver across the UK?
Yes. Every bear is made in Nottinghamshire and posted anywhere in the UK by Royal Mail tracked delivery, gift-wrapped and sent with a care card. Before it travels, you will receive a photo for approval — your bear only sets off once you are happy.
What if I’m not ready to part with the clothing yet?
Then please don’t — there is no rush, none at all. Some families order within weeks, others wait years, and both are exactly right. When you’re ready, Debbie will be here, and your bear will be made with just as much love then as it would be today.
